Your Holidays, Organized!

by Grace Brooke

Why does this time of year bring a lot of stress to many people? Is it the expectations of others or our own expectations to have a “perfect” holiday? Is it that our schedules get packed with holiday parties, out-of-town guests and other holiday time obligations?

This year, do something different! Do what you have said you were going to do last year, the year before that, and the year before that… Simplify your holidays by saying NO to events, tasks, and projects that are cluttering up your calendar and absorbing all your energy. Create a list of the things you will NOT do this year and post it where you will be reminded each day.

Another way to simplify your holidays is to plan ahead and be well prepared. This simple step may take some time initially, but will save you MOUNDS of time in the long run. Here are a few easy tips to get yourself prepared for the big day.

Tip #1:  Write out your timetable

Using a calendar, decide when to prepare each item. If anything can be made ahead and frozen, by all means do so!

After making a general timetable for the month, make a timetable for each of the several days before the actual holiday. Make notes as to which foods to prepare each day, when to take the foods out to thaw (such as a turkey), and any other specific tasks such as polishing silver, unpacking special dishes, etc.

Finally, make a timetable for the holiday. Write down the times you need to prepare dishes in order for all of them to be done at the appropriate time. If you will need help in the kitchen, determine in advance who you would like to help and what you would like them to do. Make a note of it.

Tip from Sallie Schaaf Borrink
Write down everyone you plan to buy a gift for, no matter how small the gift may be. Include ideas of what to give each person, along with the maximum amount you’re willing to spend. Don’t forget to list the people who will receive holiday tips, such as your doorman, babysitter, and mail carrier. This will help you manage your holiday budget.
